McCann's thumb sends him to IL; Garcia steps in
DROP · ARI · C James McCann suffered a right thumb contusion in Monday's game vs. SF when struck by a grounder, and the Diamondbacks are placing him on the 10-day IL per Lovullo. Adrian Del Castillo will slide into the backup catcher role behind Gabriel Moreno — Del Castillo was already the team's third catcher this season. McCann was hitting just .203/.217/.254 through limited 2026 action, so the fantasy impact is minimal. (Note: this is a separate injury from McCann's April quad strain.) Action: Drop McCann in all standard formats. Moreno remains the only rostered Arizona catcher worth holding.
Gore exits with lat tightness; he calls it a cramp
HOLD · TEX · SP MacKenzie Gore (LHP) was pulled after one inning of Monday's start vs. COL with left lat tightness, throwing 28 pitches before exiting. Per CBS and KMJ, Gore downplayed the issue post-game: "I felt kind of like a cramp in that behind-the-shoulder-blade, mid-back area... it wasn't a pain, like I hurt myself or anything." He dove for a grounder earlier in the inning, which may or may not have triggered it. Gore is 3-4 with a 4.78 ERA in 10 starts in his first Rangers season after the offseason trade from Washington. Peyton Gray covered relief. Action: Hold Gore through the next 48 hours of imaging/reassessment. If he's labeled day-to-day (likely), no IL stint, no sell-low panic. If imaging reveals a strain, drop to WATCH and revisit at the next start.
Adames thumb contusion, Lee back spasms — Giants OF crisis deepens
WATCH · SF · SS / OF Willy Adames took a grounder off his right thumb in the 5th inning Monday vs. ARI and was pinch-hit for in the 6th. Per Tony Vitello: "a little bit of a contusion there... probably as good of news as you want from that." Adames is questionable for Tuesday. Jung Hoo Lee was pulled from right field before the 4th inning with back spasms and is likely out Tuesday per Vitello. Lee has been the Giants' leadoff hitter recently (.301 average, hot recent stretch). SF was already missing Heliot Ramos (quad, IL) and starting pitcher Logan Webb (knee, IL — rehab start this week). Robbie Ray also exited the same game after being hit by a comebacker but is scheduled to make his next start. Action: Hold Adames in 12T+ (Casey Schmitt covers SS short-term). Bench Lee for Tuesday. If either lands on the IL, the Giants OF/SS depth gets thin fast — Will Brennan, Jerar Encarnacion, and Drew Gilbert are the next-up names with minimal fantasy upside.
Schwarber sits with illness; first absence of 2026
HOLD · PHI · OF/DH Kyle Schwarber was out of Monday's lineup vs. CIN with an illness, ending his 47-game season-opening start streak per interim manager Don Mattingly. Schwarber is at Citizens Bank Park and the team will see how he feels during the day; available off the bench. He's been the best hitter in MLB this season (.230/.357/.980, 20 HR leading MLB, 36 RBI) and just became the first player to 20 HRs in 2026. Bryce Harper slid to DH; Alec Bohm started at 1B. Action: Hold Schwarber in all formats. Illness absences typically resolve in 1-2 games. No structural concern.
Goldschmidt heating up; underowned in pinstripes
ADD · NYY · 1B Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-5 with 1 HR and 2 RBI Monday, sitting at .332 xwOBA with a 50% hard-hit rate (95th percentile) over the season. Goldschmidt's elite contact quality and plate discipline are being ignored at 3% ownership. He's the Yankees' regular 1B against RHP. Action: Add Goldschmidt in 12T+ formats as a 1B/CI upgrade. Underowned for the role and the Statcast profile.
Bell and Bauers multi-RBI nights — but check the Statcast
STREAM · MIN / MIL · OF/DH Josh Bell went 3-for-4 with 2 HR and 4 RBI Monday, and Jake Bauers added a 2-for-4 with 1 HR and 4 RBI. Important caveat on the buy-low framing: Bell's .312 xwOBA is below league average (~.320), so his Statcast doesn't actually scream regression-up. Bauers' .354 xwOBA is genuinely strong if it holds. The big nights are real production, but only Bauers has the underlying signal to suggest sustainability. Action: Bauers is the legitimate add in 12T+ formats — solid xwOBA + good lineup spot. Bell is more of a streaming target against soft RHP rather than a true buy-low; deeper-league play only.
Arenado 4-RBI night masks quiet underlying profile
HOLD · ARI · 3B Nolan Arenado went 1-for-4 with 1 HR and 4 RBI Monday. xwOBA (.299) and Barrel% (7.1%) confirm he's hitting roughly to true talent — the 4-RBI night is variance, not breakout. L14 has been rough (.191 prior to Monday). Action: Hold if rostered. Don't chase the multi-RBI line. Watch for 2-3 more multi-hit games before treating him as anything more than a name-brand veteran in decline.
Rafaela held out with hamstring soreness — short-term
HOLD · BOS · 2B/OF Ceddanne Rafaela sat Monday with mild hamstring soreness after a heavy weekend workload in Atlanta. Available off the bench for late-inning use. Expected back Tuesday. Precautionary, not structural. Action: Keep on bench through Tuesday. If he starts Tuesday or Wednesday, no concern. If the absence extends past midweek, escalate to WATCH.
Young and Wiemer both HBP, day-to-day
WATCH · WSH · OF Jacob Young was struck by a 93.1 mph fastball from Christian Scott on the left ribs in his first AB Monday; X-rays negative, day-to-day. Joey Wiemer entered as a pinch-runner and took a Luke Weaver fastball in the 9th, also day-to-day. Both will be reevaluated Tuesday. Negative imaging on Young is a positive sign, but soft-tissue contusions can linger. Action: Monitor Tuesday status. Neither is a high-priority add at 1-2% owned, but in deep NL-only formats they're worth tracking for daily lineup decisions.
Masyn Winn's knee discomfort flagged
WATCH · STL · SS Masyn Winn was listed as GTD with left knee discomfort after exiting Saturday's game. Status pending Tuesday's lineup. Cardinals depth at SS is thin — Jose Fermin or Thomas Saggese are the most likely fill-ins if Winn misses time. Action: Hold Winn in 12T+. If you also roster Adames, the same-week shortstop double-injury risk warrants a tertiary SS pickup as insurance.
A.J. Puk facing live hitters Tuesday; June return path
STASH · ARI · RP A.J. Puk faces live hitters Tuesday per team guidance — significant rehab milestone after a 60-day IL stint dating to spring training. Targets late-May / early-June activation. When healthy, he's a strikeout-heavy LHP with closer upside if Sewald falters. Action: Stash in dynasty and 15T+. Note that Sewald is the established Diamondbacks closer; Puk's path to saves runs through Sewald struggling or hitting the IL.
Brieske and Melton rehab progressing for DET bullpen
STASH · DET · RP / SP Beau Brieske tossed 2 IP / 25 pitches in his second rehab appearance May 15, fastball averaging 95.9 mph (topped 97.2). Troy Melton showed 2+ scoreless IP with fastball at 98.7 mph, trending toward 4-inning outings next week. Both on track for late-May activation. Action: Dynasty stash both. In redraft, monitor late-May for activation — Brieske is the safer add given relief role; Melton has SP upside if a Detroit rotation spot opens.
Cole one rehab start from activation
STASH · NYY · SP Gerrit Cole was transferred to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for his most recent rehab outing, throwing 86 pitches over 5.1 IP and touching 99.6 mph. Likely one more rehab start before activation per MLB.com. With Max Fried IL'd (elbow bone bruise) and Schlittler / Rodón / Warren in the rotation, Cole's return slots him into a top role. Action: Owners should clear roster spots for early-June activation. Cole's been at 88% owned; expect that to climb to 95%+ once activated.
Senga throwing live BP — still weeks out
WATCH · NYM · SP Kodai Senga was scheduled to throw live BP at the Mets' Florida facility May 17 per Carlos Mendoza. Return timeline still uncertain — live BP is a milestone but not imminent activation. With Holmes IL'd (fractured fibula), the Mets need rotation depth, but Senga isn't the immediate answer. Action: Hold in 12T+ with IL spots; expect mid-to-late-June return at earliest. For May/early June starts, pivot to streamers.
Williamson held out as precaution vs. LHP
WATCH · TB · IF Ben Williamson felt better Monday after waking up unwell but was held out vs. LHP Trevor Rogers. Day-to-day; Tampa Bay has a flexible bench. Possible Tuesday return. Action: Hold; expect activation midweek. Deep-league only.
MIN bats face Burrows' 6.47 xERA — streaming spot
STREAM · MIN bats · 5/20 Minnesota faces Mike Burrows on May 20 (xERA 6.47 — needs verification but high). Twins lineup gets a soft matchup. Bauers (above) and middle-of-lineup contact bats benefit. Action: DFS / streaming play in 14T+. Don't chase Bell on this matchup given the underlying xwOBA concerns flagged above.
COL bats vs. Leiter; thin-air streaming target
STREAM · COL bats · 5/20 Colorado faces Jack Leiter on May 20 (xERA 6.11 cited but worth verifying — Leiter's recent form has been better than this number suggests). Thin-air park factor + elevated opponent xERA = standard Rockies-bats streaming spot. Action: DFS streaming only. Coors home games are always live for hitter stacks; specific player picks depend on the lineup card.
Altuve to IL with Grade 2 oblique — middle infielders inherit reps
ADD · HOU · 2B Jose Altuve was placed on the IL with a Grade 2 left oblique strain per manager Joe Espada. Altuve injured himself on a swing in Saturday's 9th inning vs. TEX after homering off deGrom in the 1st. Expected absence: at least one month given the Grade 2 designation. The Astros' will rotate options at 2B, potentially Isaac Paredes, while Jeremy Pena returns to his SS duties. Action: In 14T+ leagues, add Brice Matthews or Braden Shewmake as the Altuve replacement. Cam Smith and Zach Dezenzo are corner OF options — relevant only if Jake Meyers (oblique) or other OFs miss more time, NOT the Altuve replacement.
Horwitz and Mangum chase O'Hearn's 1B reps
ADD · PIT · 1B With Ryan O'Hearn on the 10-day IL (right quad strain, since May 16, .289 / 7 HR before injury, est. return ~6/15), Spencer Horwitz and Jake Mangum inherit 1B/corner reps. Horwitz is the depth-chart leader for immediate at-bats; Mangum is the speculative deep-league play. Action: In 14T+ leagues, prioritize Horwitz for safer immediate ABs. Mangum is a NL-only / very deep speculation.
Kim and Mateo remains Braves' split SSs; Farmer IL move is corresponding roster mechanic
HOLD · ATL · UTIL Ha-Seong Kim and Jorge Mateo have been Atlanta's **starting shortstops the last few weeks. Kyle Farmer was placed on the 10-day IL with a right forearm strain as a corresponding move to activate Ronald Acuña Jr. from his own hamstring IL. Farmer had appeared in only 10 games total (off the bench at 2B/SS/DH). Action: Hold Kim and Mateo in 14T+ as a SS/UTIL. Don't add them on a misread of the Farmer move — the runway hasn't changed.
