Dominic Smith emerges from Atlanta bench

ADD · ATL · 1B/OF Dominic Smith (low-owned) went 2-for-4 with a HR and 3 RBI on May 20, with a season xwOBA around .308 and a 39% hard-hit rate. With Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy both sidelined, CBS Sports has flagged Smith as a candidate for more run at DH. Action: Add Dominic Smith in deep leagues as a DH-eligible upside play.

José Caballero nears return for Yankees infield

STASH · NYY · 2B/3B/SS/OF José Caballero (fractured right middle finger, on the IL since May 12) is eligible to come off the 10-day IL Friday, May 22, and Boone said the hope is to activate him then (Athlon Sports, May 19). Caballero had claimed the starting shortstop job (.259/.320/.400, 13 SB in 41 games) and offers versatile infield value once back. Action: Stash Caballero in 12+ team leagues; activate on the Yankees' Friday roster move.

Vodnik's IL stint opens Colorado closer race

ADD · COL · RP Victor Vodnik was placed on the 15-day IL (retro to May 18) with right ulnar nerve inflammation on May 20 (Athlon Sports). Vodnik was the de facto closer with 4 saves but carried an 8.00 ERA in 18 appearances. Antonio Senzatela (converted from starter to high-leverage relief this season, ~1.27 ERA in that role) is the most logical next-in-line for saves and holds; Keegan Thompson was selected from Triple-A to fill the roster slot. Early June is a rough ETA for Vodnik. Action: Add Antonio Senzatela in holds/saves formats as the leading closer candidate; monitor ninth-inning usage over the next week.

Rangers reeling: Nimmo and Gore both exit games in 48 hours

WATCH · TEX · OF/SP Texas absorbed back-to-back blows. Brandon Nimmo (acquired from the Mets this offseason) exited May 20's game vs the Rockies with another lower-body scare — his latest in a month that's included a left ankle issue and recurring right hamstring tightness (DK Network / Dallas Morning News). Nimmo was hitting .288 with 4 HR and 12 RBI. Separately, MacKenzie Gore (acquired from Washington in January) left May 18's start after one inning with left lat tightness (Dallas Morning News, May 18); he downplayed it and the Rangers hoped to avoid an IL stint. Gore was 3-3 (now 3-4) with a 4.50 ERA in nine prior starts. Action: Bench Nimmo until his testing clears; hold Gore as day-to-day and stash in deeper leagues pending official word on an IL move.

Edward Cabrera skips IL after blister scare

HOLD · CHC · SP Edward Cabrera (in his first season with the Cubs) exited May 20's start vs the Brewers after one pitch in the 4th with a right middle finger blister (MLB.com, May 20), having allowed 4 runs (one earned) on four hits in 3 IP. Counsell said the next start is "potentially in jeopardy," but Cabrera was optimistic, stating he intends to take the ball on schedule. A day-to-day hold for now. Action: Hold and monitor the Cubs' rotation schedule; expect Cabrera back within a turn if the blister cooperates.

Jackson Merrill's wall robbery costs Padres outfield depth

WATCH · SD · OF Jackson Merrill left May 20's game vs the Dodgers after the 4th with a back injury sustained crashing into the right-center wall while trying to rob an Ohtani leadoff home run (MLB.com / SI Padres, May 20). He stayed in for three more innings before being replaced by Bryce Johnson, and is undergoing testing. Merrill was hitting .205 before the incident. San Diego has a Thursday off-day before opening a series vs the A's Friday. Action: Bench Merrill pending test results; pivot to waiver outfielders if he lands on the IL.

Leo Jiménez accidental injury from Acuña's slide

WATCH · MIA · 2B/3B Leo Jiménez exited May 20's game vs the Braves after being accidentally kneed in the head/neck area on Ronald Acuña's slide at third base (FantasyPros, May 20). DTD status; the team will assess. Acuña remained in the game uninjured. Action: Monitor Jiménez for Friday's lineup; a possible concussion-protocol evaluation could extend his absence.

Miguel Vargas dodges damage on HBP

HOLD · CWS · 1B/3B Miguel Vargas was hit by a 95.1 mph fastball on the right wrist May 19 but stayed in and scored the go-ahead run. X-rays were negative May 20 (Yardbarker, May 20), and he was held out of Wednesday's lineup as a precaution. He's posted an .849 OPS with 11 HR on the season. Effectively a clean bill of health. Action: Hold and start Vargas once he's back in the lineup, likely within 48 hours.

Jung Hoo Lee's back spasms keep him sidelined

WATCH · SF · OF Jung Hoo Lee left May 18's game in the 4th vs the D-backs with back spasms (NBC Sports Bay Area, May 19). The Giants expected him down for Tuesday and are assessing day-to-day, with re-evaluation after an off-day. Action: Bench Lee through Thursday; monitor the Giants' post-off-day lineup.

Garrett Mitchell's shoulder remains a question mark

HOLD · MIL · OF Garrett Mitchell remains out of the lineup with a persistent shoulder/availability concern (May 20), a recurring issue for the oft-injured outfielder. No IL placement yet, but his day-to-day status leaves the Brewers' everyday CF role uncertain. Action: Hold if rostered; expect clarity after the weekend.

Yandy Díaz HBP doesn't derail elite season

HOLD · TB · 1B Yandy Díaz was hit on the hand in the 8th inning May 19 vs the Orioles and exited, but had homered earlier with two hits and 2 RBI (DK Network, May 19). Díaz is slashing .337/.425/.500 and was evaluated May 20. No IL placement; DTD. One of Tampa Bay's few offensive anchors. Action: Hold Díaz without concern; expect a return within 48 hours.

Trent Grisham's hamstring scare clouds Yankees outfield

WATCH · NYY · OF Trent Grisham exited May 20's game vs the Blue Jays in the 5th after legging out a bloop double earlier (CBS Sports, May 20). Imaging is scheduled Thursday. If it's hamstring-related, this could sideline him into next week. Action: Bench Grisham pending Thursday's imaging.

Jesús Sánchez wind-knocked out of Blue Jays game

WATCH · TOR · OF Jesús Sánchez was removed from May 20's game vs the Yankees after landing hard on his chest on a diving catch attempt in the 7th (RotoWire, May 20). The team isn't very worried about an extended absence — he had the wind knocked out of him. DTD; reassessment ongoing. Action: Bench Sánchez for Thursday; expect a return within 48 hours if he's breathing normally.

Kyle Schwarber misses multiple games with illness

HOLD · PHI · DH Kyle Schwarber woke up sick May 18 and, as of May 20, had missed three straight games vs the Reds with a stomach issue (Inquirer, May 20). Mattingly said he's "getting closer" and could be available as a pinch-hitter. Schwarber leads MLB with 20 HR and ranks among the league OPS leaders. Still DTD. Action: Hold Schwarber without concern, but check the lineup card daily until he's confirmed back.

Milwaukee batters exploit Wrobleski's xERA mismatch

STREAM · MIL · OF/DH Milwaukee hitters face LHP Justin Wrobleski (xERA ~6.27) on May 22 — a strong DFS/streaming window. No specific under-50%-owned MIL bat stands out from yesterday's slate, but the soft matchup makes the Brewers' lineup broadly rosterable in that game. Action: Stream MIL bats vs Wrobleski on May 22 if running a DFS overlay.

Berríos done for 2026 after Tommy John surgery

SELL HIGH · TOR · SP José Berríos underwent full Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on May 20 (Blue Jays manager John Schneider, via MLB.com), repairing a stress fracture and ligament damage that had lingered since Spring Training. He's expected to be sidelined well into 2027 — a typical full TJ recovery runs 14+ months. Toronto's rotation depth, already thinned by Max Scherzer and Cody Ponce issues, takes another hit. Any Berríos keeper value is gone for this season. Action: Drop Berríos in re-draft and single-season formats; in keeper leagues, factor a 2027 All-Star-break-or-later return into his value.

Cubs rotation gutted: Horton out for year, Steele still rehabbing

HOLD · CHC · SP The Cubs remain without their top arms. Cade Horton was ruled out for the entire 2026 season after elbow (UCL) surgery — that diagnosis was confirmed by manager Craig Counsell back on April 7, so this is established context, not fresh news. Justin Steele is still working back from his own 2025 UCL surgery, with a targeted return in the first half of 2026 (not late in the year). With Matthew Boyd also banged up, Chicago has leaned on Colin Rea and Javier Assad. Any Cubs SP carrying value is a reasonable sell-high to a contender. Action: Shop productive Cubs starters to contenders; monitor Steele's rehab for a buy-low window if his return nears.
