Morning Java - 08/18: Marte to the Restricted List, Arenado Sits with Trunk Discomfort, McClanahan Back in the Rotation

Arizona placed Ketel Marte on the restricted list shortly before first pitch Monday in Boston after he did not report to the ballpark, with Torey Lovullo describing it as a personal matter and saying Marte "is fine." There's no minimum or maximum stay on the restricted list, so bench him and wait for something concrete rather than guessing at a timeline. Nolan Arenado sat the same game with trunk discomfort and could need a short IL stint. Shane McClanahan is back off the injured list and worth adding before he stretches out to full starts, while Carlos Rodón returns today at Baltimore on a pitch limit and Max Fried heads back to the IL with a recurrence of the elbow bone bruise that already cost him months.

TL;DRSkim

The five fastest-moving roster calls of the morning, in priority order:

  • WATCH - Ketel Marte placed on the restricted list after not reporting for Monday's game; Lovullo says it's a personal matter and "he is fine," with no timeline.
  • WATCH - Nolan Arenado sat with trunk discomfort and may need an IL stint; Arizona is calling him day-to-day.
  • ADD - Shane McClanahan (47% owned) reinstated and back in the Tampa Bay rotation.
  • HOLD - Carlos Rodón (53% owned) returns from the IL to start today at Baltimore; expect a pitch limit.
  • DROP - Max Fried back on the IL with a recurrence of the left elbow bone bruise that cost him earlier this season.

Marte Placed on the Restricted List

WATCH · ARI · 2B

Arizona placed Ketel Marte on the restricted list shortly before first pitch Monday in Boston after he did not report to the ballpark. Torey Lovullo told reporters it's a personal issue and, importantly, that Marte "is fine." Infielder Jose Fernandez was recalled from Triple-A Reno, having already been with the club on the taxi squad in case Arenado couldn't play.

Players on the restricted list are away from the team for non-baseball reasons and receive no pay or service time, and there's no fixed limit on the length of a stay. Marte could theoretically be reinstated before Tuesday's game, or be out considerably longer. Asked about the path forward, Lovullo said, "I haven't got that far." Marte is hitting .249/.314/.446 with 21 homers and 67 RBIs.

Action: Don't drop him, and don't guess at a timeline. Restricted-list stays have no minimum or maximum, so this could resolve today or extend for weeks. Bench him, make sure you have a startable second baseman, and wait for the club to say something concrete. This is a personal matter and the speculation circulating around it isn't worth acting on.

Arenado Sits with Trunk Discomfort

WATCH · ARI · 3B

Nolan Arenado did not play against Boston after leaving Sunday's game in Atlanta with what the team called trunk discomfort. Arizona says it isn't expected to be long term, though a short IL stint is possible. He'd been Arizona's best hitter in August.

Action: Bench him until he's back in a lineup. Torso and oblique-adjacent injuries sap power for weeks even without an IL trip, so temper expectations on the return.

McClanahan Back in the Tampa Bay Rotation

ADD · TB · SP

Shane McClanahan (47% owned) was reinstated from the injured list, with Joe Boyle optioned to Triple-A. He threw three innings in a Durham rehab outing, and Kevin Cash indicated there's no hard pitch limit but that they'd evaluate inning to inning.

Action: Add him where available. There's real value in getting a pitcher of this caliber before he strings together full starts, though the first outing or two will be short enough to limit the win equity.

Rodón Returns Today at Baltimore

HOLD · NYY · SP

Carlos Rodón (53% owned) comes off the injured list to start today against the Orioles.

Action: Start him only if you can absorb a short outing. He's coming back on a leash after a rehab progression, so treat today as a check on health rather than a full start.

Fried Back on the IL with a Recurring Bone Bruise

DROP · NYY · SP

Max Fried is returning to the injured list with a left elbow bone bruise, the same injury that sidelined him earlier this season.

Action: Drop in shallow redraft. A recurrence of the same elbow issue in mid-August, after he'd already missed months, makes a meaningful return this season unlikely. Stash only in deep or dynasty formats.

Carpenter Sent to a Foot Specialist

WATCH · DET · OF

A.J. Hinch sent Kerry Carpenter to a foot specialist for further evaluation, with a report expected today.

Action: Bench him and find a substitute. A specialist referral for a foot issue that's already lingered signals something more than routine soreness, and Carpenter has been struggling at the plate regardless.

Cruz Activated but Sits Against a Lefty

HOLD · PIT · SS

Oneil Cruz (80% owned) was activated from the injured list but was held out against a left-handed starter.

Action: Hold. He's back on the active roster and should play regularly against right-handers, which is most days.

Story Could Return This Weekend

WATCH · BOS · SS

Trevor Story said he'll play the next two rehab games at Triple-A Worcester before the club re-evaluates, and acknowledged it's possible he's activated as soon as Friday against the Giants.

Action: Hold and watch the rehab box scores. If he clears the next two games, he's a priority pickup in leagues where he was dropped.

Bellinger Working Through His Rehab

WATCH · NYY · OF

Cody Bellinger (95% owned) is progressing through his Triple-A rehab assignment with the Yankees targeting a return within days.

Action: Hold and prepare to activate. A return this quickly would beat the original four-to-six-week timeline on the Grade 2 strain.

Reds Call Up Maxwell, DFA Emanuel

STASH · CIN · RP

Cincinnati recalled Zach Maxwell and designated Kent Emanuel for assignment. Maxwell, like Luis Mey before him, was stretched out at Triple-A, pointing to multi-inning work.

Action: Deep-league stash. Watch his first few outings for velocity and strikeout rate before spending on him.

Giants Call Up Wilkinson

STASH · SF · SP

San Francisco is calling up left-hander Matt Wilkinson, acquired in the Patrick Bailey trade. He's allowed 59 hits in 90 innings this season with 96 strikeouts.

Action: Dynasty stash. The peripherals are strong, but there's no defined role yet.

Red Sox Select Olds, Option Burgos

WATCH · BOS · RP

Boston selected right-hander Wyatt Olds to the active roster and optioned Raymond Burgos to Triple-A Worcester.

Action: No action outside the deepest formats.

Bennett's Start Pushed Back

HOLD · BOS · SP

Jake Bennett's start has been pushed to next weekend against the Giants, a scheduling move with no injury attached.

Action: Adjust your weekly plans if you were counting on two starts from him.

Báez Ownership Spikes After His Debut

HOLD · STL · OF

Joshua Báez is up to 43% rostered, the largest single-day ownership gain in Yahoo leagues, following his three-homer debut.

Action: If you got him Sunday, hold. If not, the window has closed in most leagues - that's a 37-point jump in a day.

Closers Convert Across the Board

HOLD · STL / PHI / DET · RP

Riley O'Brien (66% owned) struck out three in a clean save for St. Louis. Jhoan Duran (93% owned) converted for Philadelphia. Kenley Jansen (39% owned) picked up a save for Detroit with two strikeouts.

Action: Hold all three. No role changes anywhere in this group.

Phillies Edge Miami 6-5

HOLD · PHI / MIA · TEAM

Philadelphia beat the Marlins 6-5 in a close game. Brian Navarreto homered for Miami, his first of the season, at 103.4 mph and 368 feet.

Action: No moves triggered.
