TL;DRSkim
The five fastest-moving roster calls of the morning, in priority order:
- ADD - Kade Anderson, Seattle's top pitching prospect, was called up and starts Saturday against the Cubs; add him in all formats.
- DROP - Spencer Steer will miss the rest of the season with the wrist injury; surgery remains on the table.
- ADD - Vladimir Guerrero Jr. cleared concussion protocol and is expected back in the lineup tomorrow in New York.
- STASH - Roman Anthony is two games into his rehab assignment but is expected to stay in the minors through at least next week; Aug. 28 is the checkpoint to watch.
- HOLD - Cody Bellinger (95% owned) played six innings in left field on rehab and could be activated Sunday.
Mariners Call Up Kade Anderson to Start Saturday
ADD · SEA · SP
Seattle promoted top pitching prospect Kade Anderson, who is lined up to start Saturday against the Cubs.
Action: Add him in all formats. A club calling up its best pitching prospect and handing him a start immediately, in the middle of a playoff race, is telling you exactly how it views him. Rookie starters carry volatility, but the opportunity is real and the price is a waiver claim.
Steer's Season Is Over
DROP · CIN · IF
Spencer Steer will miss the remainder of the season with the right wrist injury he's been managing. Surgery is still on the table, though a full recovery by spring training is expected either way.
Action: Drop everywhere, including most keeper formats. We flagged the partial tendon sheath tear two weeks ago as a month-plus absence; it's now the whole season.
Guerrero Cleared from Concussion Protocol
ADD · TOR · 1B
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. passed his final concussion tests, is feeling good, and is expected back in the lineup tomorrow in New York after an IL placement retroactive to Aug. 15.
Action: Activate immediately. He's back in the middle of the Blue Jays order with no restrictions mentioned, and a week-long absence for a bat like this is exactly the kind of gap that ends without warning.
Anthony Building Up at Double-A
STASH · BOS · OF
Roman Anthony is two games into his rehab assignment with Double-A Portland, his first game action since May 4, when he suffered a partially torn ring finger ligament on a check swing. He opened Tuesday by reaching base in all four plate appearances - 2-for-2 with a home run and two walks - then went 0-for-3 with a strikeout Thursday after a day off. He's 2-for-5 with two RBI across the two games.
The Red Sox are expected to keep him in the minors through at least next week as he builds up game legs and works back into the outfield, wanting to see a stretch of pain-free games first. Aug. 28 against the Yankees has been floated as a realistic checkpoint, and Boston could stretch the assignment to September roster expansion.
Action: Stash him if you have an IL slot or a deep bench, but don't burn an active roster spot expecting him this week. He'll hit at the top of the Boston order the moment he's back, which makes him worth holding through the wait in leagues where you can afford it.
Bellinger Nears Activation
HOLD · NYY · OF
Cody Bellinger (95% owned) went 0-for-3 across six innings in left field in his rehab game at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He gets a day off today and could be activated for Sunday against Toronto.
Action: Hold and clear a roster spot for Sunday. Six innings in the field is the box he needed to check, and the hitless line means nothing in one rehab game.
Toglia Dislocates His Shoulder on a Diving Catch
DROP · CIN · 1B/OF
Michael Toglia dislocated his right shoulder making a diving catch on a Geraldo Perdomo line drive in the first inning of Friday's series opener in Arizona. He landed awkwardly, was in visible pain immediately, and left with training staff supporting his right arm. TJ Friedl replaced him in left field. Toglia had been called up from Triple-A Louisville on Aug. 11 and appeared in 10 games.
Action: Drop in all formats. Shoulder dislocations for position players routinely cost a month or more, and Toglia was a short-term power flier rather than an established piece. Combined with the Steer news, Cincinnati's lineup depth is in serious trouble.
Pallante to the IL with Elbow Inflammation
WATCH · STL · SP
Andre Pallante was placed on the 15-day IL with right elbow inflammation, with no structural damage detected and the Cardinals expecting a minimum stay. Quinn Mathews joins the rotation for Saturday's start and Kyle Leahy takes Sunday, with Ryan Fernandez moving to the bullpen.
Action: Hold Pallante with IL room; drop in shallow leagues. Mathews is the more interesting name - a rookie getting a rotation spot on a club still hovering at .500 is worth a look in deeper formats if he goes deep Saturday.
Cardinals Face More Injury Trouble
WATCH · STL · TEAM
Beyond Pallante, Hunter Dobbins reported right arm tightness but said the sensation was different from his prior ligament damage. Everson Pereira was struck on the left hand by a pitch and underwent X-rays at the ballpark, with the club concerned about a possible fracture.
Action: Bench both pending imaging. A hand fracture would end Pereira's season, and Dobbins' own comparison to prior ligament trouble is the detail that makes his situation worth watching closely.
Misiorowski Extends His Scoreless Run
HOLD · MIL · SP
Jacob Misiorowski threw six scoreless innings on 96 pitches with six strikeouts and four hits allowed, leading Milwaukee past Atlanta 2-1. Pat Murphy noted he's leaned more on his slider and cutter recently, possibly managing some fatigue, while emphasizing that a pitcher doesn't need to feel great to pitch great.
Action: Hold. The pitch-mix shift is worth tracking into September - if the fastball usage keeps declining, that's the first signal of a workload issue on a first-year starter already deep into a career-high innings load.
Wesneski Strong in Houston's Shutout
HOLD · HOU · SP
Hayden Wesneski allowed one hit over five innings with three walks and four strikeouts on 91 pitches in a 4-0 win over the Athletics, generating eight whiffs on 14 swings against his sweeper. Yordan Alvarez reached 90 RBIs.
Action: Add in deeper leagues. That's his third straight effective start since returning, and the sweeper generating whiffs at that rate is the underlying reason to believe it.
Yamamoto Sharp Again
HOLD · LAD · SP
Yoshinobu Yamamoto threw 6⅓ innings with nine strikeouts and two earned runs on 107 pitches in a 5-4 Dodgers win over Pittsburgh, lowering his ERA to 2.61. Andy Pages was hit by a 100.2 mph fastball in the third but stayed in the game.
Action: Hold Yamamoto as a front-line starter. Check on Pages before locking lineups.
Kirk's Hitting Streak Reaches 10
HOLD · TOR · C
Alejandro Kirk (45% owned) extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single, though Toronto fell 3-1 to the Yankees.
Action: Hold, and add in two-catcher leagues. A 10-game streak from a catcher hitting in the middle of the order is worth more than the ownership suggests, and Guerrero's return should improve the traffic around him.
Sanoja's Walk-Off Caps a Big August
ADD · MIA · OF
Javier Sanoja delivered a walk-off hit against Washington and is slashing .362/.393/.603 with three homers and 15 RBIs in August, the best stretch of his career. Otto Lopez added an RBI single, snapping a slump that had him at a .531 OPS since the break.
Action: Add Sanoja in deeper leagues. A near-1.000 OPS month from a player getting regular at-bats on a team with nothing to lose is worth a speculative claim.
Detmers Wasted Again
HOLD · LAA · SP
Reid Detmers threw six shutout innings on six hits with five strikeouts in a 2-1 Angels loss to Texas. It's the fifth time since June 27 that Los Angeles has scored one run or fewer in a Detmers start.
Action: Hold for ratios and strikeouts, but stop expecting wins. The Angels have given him the worst run support in baseball over a two-month stretch.
Walker's Errorless Streak Ends
HOLD · HOU · 1B
Christian Walker committed an error to end a 121-game errorless streak, the longest active run in the majors. He also singled to end an 0-for-16 slide.
Action: Hold. The hit ending the slump is the fantasy-relevant part.
Paredes Reaches 43 Plate Appearances Without a Strikeout
HOLD · HOU · 3B
Isaac Paredes extended baseball's longest active strikeout-free streak to 43 consecutive plate appearances.
Action: Hold. Contact at this level props up your batting average through cold stretches, which is exactly what you want from a corner bat when the power goes quiet.
Lavender Joins Rare Mets Company
STASH · NYM · RP
Nate Lavender became the third pitcher in Mets history to open his career with at least eight consecutive scoreless appearances, joining Joe Smith and Jack Leathersich. Separately, Mark Vientos began a rehab assignment at Double-A Binghamton, going 0-for-2 with two strikeouts and a walk as he works back from a fractured right hand.
Action: Dynasty stash for Lavender. Vientos isn't rosterable until he's back in a major league lineup.
Megill Converts His 32nd Save
HOLD · MIL · RP
Trevor Megill (59% owned) recorded his 32nd save in Milwaukee's 2-1 win over Atlanta as the Brewers held the best record in baseball.
Action: Hold. A closer with this volume on the league's best team is as secure as the position gets.
Bednar Stays Locked In
HOLD · NYY · RP
David Bednar (88% owned) is 29-for-32 in save chances this season.
Action: Hold. No threat to the role.
Jordan Walker's Power Keeps Coming
HOLD · STL · OF
Jordan Walker has hit 27 home runs this season, half his career total of 54, in 535 plate appearances after needing 1,039 for the first 27.
Action: Hold. The power breakout is real, and he's carrying a Cardinals lineup that needs it.
White Sox Go Back-to-Back-to-Back
HOLD · CWS · TEAM
Chicago hit three consecutive home runs for the second time this season in a 6-4 win over the Mets. Davis Martin and Kyle Teel could begin rehab assignments next week.
Action: Watch Martin and Teel for rehab news; neither is addable yet.
Mayer Not Ready to Face Boston
WATCH · SF · SS
Marcelo Mayer isn't healthy enough to face his former team this weekend. Separately, Carson Whisenhunt will not start Sunday, with Matt Wilkinson expected to pitch instead.
Action: Hold Mayer in dynasty; he's not a redraft consideration until he's playing.
Santillan Activated by Cincinnati
WATCH · CIN · RP
Tony Santillan (3% owned) was activated from the injured list.
Action: Deep-league watch for leverage innings, which are increasingly available in that bullpen.
