Morning Java - 08/30: Soto Back as DH, Rengifo Carted Off, Ohtani's Mound Return Shelved

The five fastest-moving roster calls of the morning, in priority order:

• HOLD — Juan Soto (100% owned) was reinstated from the 10-day IL and hit second as the DH in the Mets' 6-2 win over Houston. No rehab assignment; back from a grade 2 left calf strain that cost him 31 games.
• IL/STASH — Luis Rengifo sprained his right knee and was carted off in the seventh at Tropicana Field. He's flying back to San Diego for evaluation. Do not drop him blind — he'd been playing 2B, 3B and LF for a contender.
• WATCH — Shohei Ohtani's pitching return is off. Roberts says he's not 100% with either the left knee or the right biceps and doesn't expect him to get there this season. The bat is unaffected.
• HOLD — Max Fried returned from the IL in the doubleheader nightcap but lasted only 3⅔ innings, allowing one run. Yankees still won; temper next-start expectations.
• ADD — Ketel Marte is expected to be activated for Arizona's Aug. 31 series opener vs. Philadelphia.

Soto Returns as DH, Mets Beat Houston

Juan Soto (100% owned) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Saturday's game against the Astros, batting second and serving as designated hitter in New York's 6-2 win. Eric Wagaman was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse in the corresponding move.

Soto skipped a minor-league rehab assignment entirely — he'd been pushing for a direct return. He had been out since July 24 with a grade 2 strain of his left calf, missing 31 games. It's his second calf injury of the season after a right calf strain cost him time in April, an unusual run of trouble for a player who appeared in all 162 games in 2025.

The bat was never the question. Before the injury Soto was slashing .283/.408/.539 with 21 home runs and 52 RBI across 84 games, with an All-Star selection along the way. Interim manager Andy Green made clear he'll hit second every day.

One context note for expectations: this is a last-place team. The Mets sit at 61-75 and are roughly a dozen games out of the final wild card, so counting stats will be constrained by the lineup around him.

Action: HOLD — Start him immediately. The DH slot actually helps by reducing calf re-aggravation risk. Monitor whether he moves back to the outfield.

Rengifo Carted Off With Right Knee Sprain

Luis Rengifo sprained his right knee and was carted off in the seventh inning of Saturday's 7-6 loss at Tampa Bay. He went down after throwing wildly on a relay to home — Jackson Merrill fielded a Yandy Díaz carom in center and threw to Rengifo, whose throw sailed past catcher Luis Campusano and let two runners score, tying the game. Rengifo dropped to the dirt on a non-contact injury, could not put weight on his right leg, and needed help standing before being loaded onto the cart. The Padres say he'll fly back to San Diego for further evaluation.

Do not treat this as a depth-piece story. Rengifo has been playing second, third and left field for San Diego since arriving midseason and had been swinging a hot bat. "This one stings a little bit more than normal," manager Craig Stammen said. "Just losing Luis, that situation is tough for all of us to handle."

The Padres fell to 72-64 and, with Arizona winning at San Francisco, dropped out of the final NL wild-card spot by half a game.

Action: IL/STASH — Move him to an IL slot if you have one. A carted-off knee with no weight-bearing points toward a multi-week absence, but wait for imaging before cutting a multi-position bat.

Dodgers Postpone Ohtani's Mound Return — Knee and Biceps Both in Play

The Dodgers have postponed Shohei Ohtani's (100% owned) scheduled return to the mound. This is not routine caution. Dave Roberts said Ohtani is not 100% with either his left knee or his right biceps, and Friday's bullpen was abbreviated to 20 pitches rather than the usual 30-plus. Roberts also said he doesn't see everything getting to 100% by season's end, and indicated that if Sunday was out, Tuesday was unlikely as well. Tyler Glasnow covers the start.

Ohtani has not pitched since July 3, when he threw a season-high 110 pitches against San Diego. Whenever he does return, the first outing is expected to be one inning.

The bat is unaffected — he's slashing .283/.383/.535 with 30 homers, 80 RBI and 10 steals.

Action: WATCH — Keep starting him as a hitter without hesitation. Write off meaningful pitching production for 2026; a one-inning September cameo has no fantasy value in most formats.

Fried Returns, But Only Goes 3⅔

Max Fried came off the IL to start the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader and lasted just 3⅔ innings, allowing one run on Nick Sogard's third-inning homer before being lifted in the fourth with a runner on and two out.

That's the number that matters. A sub-four-inning return means the Yankees are still building him back from the left elbow bone bruise, and his next outing is unlikely to carry a full workload either. The Yankees won the game anyway, breaking it open with five runs in the eighth.

Action: HOLD — Never a drop candidate, but do not slot him into a must-win week expecting six innings. Reassess after his next start.

Red Sox and Yankees Split the Doubleheader

Boston took the opener 6-0 behind Jake Bennett, who held the Yankees to three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. New York managed five hits total and committed several defensive miscues. Carlos Rodón allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts over 4⅔ innings on 88 pitches — his third start back from a second IL stint for elbow inflammation, still on a climbing pitch count.

The Yankees answered in the nightcap, with Brayan Bello faltering for Boston and New York scoring five in the eighth off Raymond Burgos. New York moved to 77-59 and holds a comfortable lead over Boston for the top AL wild-card spot.

Fantasy relevance: Bennett is a legitimate streaming target — the three-hit, no-walk, seven-strikeout line is his profile when it's working. Yankees bats remain a situational concern given persistent RISP struggles, but a five-run eighth is not evidence of a lineup to bench wholesale.

Action: Stream Bennett in favorable matchups. Hold Yankees regulars; the offense is streaky, not broken.

McLean Throws Seven, Wins No. 10

Nolan McLean worked seven innings on Saturday, allowing two hits and three walks with one unearned run and four strikeouts, earning his 10th win as the Mets beat Houston 6-2. His ERA dropped to 3.06. It was the fourth time this season he's completed seven innings and his first since June 17 against Cincinnati.

This is not a fringe arm. McLean is a genuine NL Rookie of the Year candidate with a sub-1.20 WHIP and a strikeout total among the league leaders, and the seven-inning outings matter in a rotation that has struggled to go deep. Saturday's four strikeouts were below his norm — this one was contact management, not a bat-missing showcase.

Action: HOLD — He should be rostered in every 12-team league and most 10-teamers. If he's on your wire, he's the top pitching add on this board.

Hancock Stayed In After Groin Tweak, Wednesday Start on Track

Emerson Hancock tweaked his left groin in the first inning of Friday's loss at Toronto, sprinting off the mound for an awkward lunging tag on Nathan Lukes at first — and then stayed in the game and completed five innings, throwing 67 pitches and allowing five earned runs in an 8-1 loss.

He was moving around the clubhouse without significant discomfort Saturday and remains on track for his scheduled start against Boston on Wednesday, provided his bullpen session goes well. Seattle is being cautious but has not indicated an IL move. The right-hander has made 25 starts with a 3.57 ERA and 126 strikeouts over 138.2 innings.

Rotation context: the Mariners are temporarily moving Bryce Miller to the bullpen, which thins their depth if Hancock does miss time.

Action: WATCH — Don't drop him. Confirm the bullpen session lands before locking him into a weekly lineup, and have a backup streamer identified for Wednesday.

Marte Expected Back for Aug. 31 Opener

Ketel Marte is expected to be activated ahead of Arizona's Aug. 31 series opener against Philadelphia after a 10-day IL stint for a knee issue. He steps straight back into an everyday role and a premium lineup spot on a team that just claimed the final NL wild-card position.

Action: ADD — Claim now rather than waiting for the official move. Queue him for tomorrow's lineup.

Diamondbacks Take the Final NL Wild Card

Arizona's win at San Francisco pushed the Diamondbacks past San Diego for the third NL wild-card spot by half a game. Merrill Kelly delivered five scoreless innings on 72 pitches against San Francisco, with a fastball in-zone rate that spiked well above his recent baseline. When Kelly lands the heater for strikes he's genuinely effective; when he doesn't, the outings get short.

Action: HOLD in 14-team-plus formats. The command variance makes him a matchup play, not a set-and-forget starter. One start is not a trend — check his next outing before betting on a ceiling week.

Wood Nearing Return From Oblique Strain

James Wood is scheduled to play seven innings in left field with Double-A Harrisburg as he works back from a left oblique strain suffered Aug. 3. Manager Blake Butera indicated they'll give him Monday off and reassess after the assignment, pointing toward a late-week or early-September return.

This is a legitimate star. Wood was hitting .265 with 30 home runs, 73 RBI and 17 steals through 114 games with a .393 on-base percentage — a five-category contributor on a rebuilding club that has no reason to rush him but also no reason to hold him back.

Action: ADD in any league where he's available, and IL-stash him if you have the slot. The return window is inside a week and the production ceiling is top-30 overall.

Uribe and Romero Nearing Brewers Activation

Abner Uribe and JoJo Romero are back with the Brewers following rehab assignments at High-A Wisconsin. Uribe becomes eligible for activation Monday, Aug. 31, to open the Cubs series; Romero's timeline remains less certain, with early September the realistic target.

Uribe was out with a right forearm flexor strain, characterized by the club as mild. Romero — acquired from the Cardinals at the deadline — has been out since an emergency appendectomy in mid-July and has yet to debut for Milwaukee. Both returns coincide with September roster expansion.

Action: WATCH — Important framing: Uribe is the setup man ahead of closer Trevor Megill, so this is a holds-and-ratios play, not saves speculation. Romero is a deep-league arm only.

Martín Pérez Holding a Rotation Spot in Atlanta

The role he'd return to is the problem. Williams has a 4.66 ERA and 1.66 WHIP with 15 saves this season, New York moved to a committee in his absence, and the Mets are a last-place team that will generate few save chances down the stretch.

Action: WATCH — Only worth an IL slot in saves-desperate deep leagues. In 12-team formats there are better uses of the roster spot.

Mets Place Luis Robert Jr. on Outright Waivers
