Morning Java - 09/01: Rengifo Out for the Year, Holmes Dominates at Wrigley, Marte Booed in Return

The five fastest-moving roster calls of the morning, in priority order:
- DROP — Luis Rengifo is done for 2026. Imaging revealed a full ACL tear plus an MCL sprain in his right knee; season-ending surgery to follow.
- ADD — Clay Holmes (35% owned) threw six shutout innings with eight strikeouts for the Cubs. He's a starter carrying a 2.26 ERA and 1.06 WHIP — badly underowned.
- ADD — Michael King tossed six scoreless at Cincinnati to drop his ERA to 3.11. Padres SP1, not a bullpen arm.
- HOLD — Ketel Marte (99% owned) returned at DH and went 1-for-3 with a walk in a 2-1 loss, greeted by heavy booing two weeks after his no-show in Boston.
- WATCH — Aaron Judge is cleared for cage work. Boone says a return on the next homestand is "possible," potentially without a rehab assignment.
Rengifo's Season Ends With Torn ACL

Luis Rengifo will undergo season-ending surgery after imaging revealed a full ACL tear and an MCL sprain in his right knee. He was hurt in the seventh inning of Saturday's 7-6 loss at Tampa Bay, throwing across his body toward home while chasing Taylor Walls as Cedric Mullins broke for the plate. The knee buckled on a non-contact play and he needed help off the field.
This is a bigger loss than the roster line suggests. Rengifo signed a minor-league deal after Milwaukee released him on June 23, debuted July 10, and hit .292 with four homers, 17 RBI and a .784 OPS across 38 games — 1.0 bWAR, more than Manny Machado or Jake Cronenworth produced in far more playing time. He batted first, second, fourth, fifth and ninth for Craig Stammen, played left field in 22 of those 38 games, and was the only switch-hitter on the active roster.
San Diego was swept in the series and now sits in the final NL wild-card spot by a half-game over Arizona with 25 games left. With Gavin Sheets also on the IL, left field opens up for Austin Hays, Dustin Harris and Samad Taylor.
Action: DROP in all formats — there's no return. If you need the at-bats, Hays is the likeliest beneficiary of the playing time rather than Taylor.
Holmes Blanks Milwaukee at Wrigley

Clay Holmes (35% owned) threw six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts against the Brewers.
The ownership number is the story. Holmes is a starting pitcher, acquired from the Mets at the Aug. 3 deadline alongside Tyrone Taylor for prospect Jefferson Rojas, and he's carrying a 2.26 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP into September. He's been rostered like a reliever and priced like one.
He also isn't going anywhere — the Cubs were aggressive buyers this summer, adding Kevin Gausman and Edward Cabrera alongside Holmes, and they're playing for October.
Action: ADD in every format where he's available. A sub-2.30 ERA starter at 35% ownership is the clearest add on this board.
King Goes Six Scoreless at Cincinnati

Michael King delivered six shutout innings against the Reds, lowering his ERA to 3.11 with a 2.41 mark over his last 10 starts.
King is San Diego's number one starter, not a setup man. He's 8-9 with roughly 135 strikeouts and a 1.17 WHIP, leading Padres starters in essentially every meaningful category, and he's been sharpest late — most of his damage came in the first three months. The sinker-changeup combination is the engine; when the changeup plays, he's difficult.
Action: ADD or HOLD as an SP3 in mixed leagues. The win total lags the performance because of San Diego's offense, so buy the ratios and strikeouts, not the record.
Marte Returns to Boos, Goes 1-for-3

Ketel Marte (99% owned) returned to the Diamondbacks lineup as designated hitter and was met with sustained booing at Chase Field, two weeks after an unexcused no-show before a game in Boston on Aug. 17. He went 1-for-3 with a walk — a groundout, a lineout, a walk and an opposite-field single — in a 2-1 loss to Philadelphia.
Marte apologized to Torey Lovullo before the game. "In that instance, I failed him by not showing up," he said. "That morning I woke up, my body was in pain and I just couldn't react. No one made the decision for me." He said his teammates accepted the apology. Lovullo, who has described Marte as complex and privately uncertain about his future in Arizona, said afterward: "I'm not surprised, and I think he handled it very well."
For fantasy, two things matter more than the box score. He came in hitting .249 with 21 homers and 67 RBI — a down year by his standards. And he's being used at DH, which is worth watching if your league requires games played at second base for eligibility. Arizona fell a half-game behind San Diego for the final NL wild card.
Action: HOLD — He's rostered everywhere and the bat is still the best version of this lineup. Track whether he returns to second base and whether the situation stays settled.
Ureña Snaps Angels' Skid With Career-High-Tying Eight K's

Walbert Ureña threw seven innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts and no walks in a 10-1 win over the Yankees, ending the Angels' seven-game losing streak. Manager Kurt Suzuki called it "the sign of an ace." Mike Trout and Christian Moore each drove in two.
The zero-walk line is what stands out for a young arm. With George Klassen on the IL, Ureña has become one of the few dependable pieces in a thin rotation.
Action: HOLD in 14-team-plus formats and dynasty. In shallow mixed leagues he's a matchup stream — the Angels' offense and bullpen make wins unreliable regardless of how he pitches.
Rangers Lose Gray and Winn to IL

Texas placed Peyton Gray (right elbow inflammation, retroactive to Aug. 31) and Cole Winn (rotator cuff strain, retroactive to Aug. 29) on the 15-day IL, recalling Robby Ahlstrom and Ben Peoples.
Action: WATCH — Neither Gray nor Winn is rosterable in standard formats. Track Ahlstrom and Peoples for role clarity over the next few days; neither is an add yet.
Seymour Fans 10 in Tampa Bay Start

Ian Seymour (43% owned) struck out 10 over 6.1 innings, allowing three earned runs.
Read the whole line before chasing. Ten strikeouts is a genuine signal and the swing-and-miss stuff is real, but three earned runs means this was a good start rather than a dominant one.
Action: ADD in 12-team and deeper leagues, where the strikeout upside plays. In 10-team formats, stream him in favorable matchups rather than committing a roster spot.
Riley Greene Returns Today

Riley Greene is set to be activated after roughly three weeks on the 10-day IL, calling it "the worst three weeks of his life." Detroit also promoted John Peck and Yilmer Diaz from Toledo, with Beau Brieske due up as well.
Action: WATCH — Get him back in your lineup, but expect the Tigers to manage his workload in the first week. Check for scheduled rest days before locking him into a weekly format.
Wood's Return Slips a Few Days

James Wood began a rehab assignment with Double-A Harrisburg on Aug. 30, but Washington will likely give him at least a couple more days to build conditioning rather than activating him immediately.
Wood is the highest-upside bat on the watch list — he was hitting .265 with 30 homers, 73 RBI and 17 steals with a .393 OBP before the oblique strain.
Action: WATCH — Hold the IL slot. This is a short delay, not a setback, and he's worth the wait in any format.
Joe Ryan Starts Triple-A Rehab

Joe Ryan is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul and will need at least two appearances before rejoining Minnesota.
Two corrections to the framing worth making: Ryan is a starting pitcher, and the Twins are not chasing a playoff spot — they just put Byron Buxton on the IL in a lost season. That combination argues for a cautious build-up rather than a rushed return.
Action: STASH in 12-team-plus formats. He's a quality arm when healthy, but two rehab outings plus a September return on a non-contender caps the upside.
Buxton to the IL With Hip Impingement

Byron Buxton was placed on the 10-day IL with a right hip impingement after exiting Sunday's game. He is on the IL, so a minimum of 10 days applies regardless of how the club characterizes the discomfort.
Action: WATCH — IL-stash if you have the slot. With Minnesota out of contention and four weeks left, a defensible drop in redraft if you need the roster spot.
Abrams Scratched With Back Tightness

CJ Abrams was scratched from Monday's lineup with back tightness — a new issue on top of the left ankle sprain he'd been managing, which produced negative X-rays and reduced swelling as of Aug. 31.
Separately, Blake Butera said Abrams will move to a roughly even split between shortstop and second base going forward. That's a positional-eligibility question worth tracking in leagues with games-played thresholds.
Action: WATCH — Don't start him until he's confirmed in a lineup. Two soft-tissue issues stacked on a speed-dependent player is a real flag.
Pedro Ramírez Out With Back Spasms

Robert Suarez is throwing from 120 feet on flat ground and could progress to mound work as soon as today. He remains on the 15-day IL.
Action: STASH in deep and holds leagues. Flat-ground throwing to a big-league return is still several steps, so don't burn a standard roster spot yet.
Williamson Set to Return Wednesday

Brandon Williamson (0% owned) returns to the Cincinnati rotation Wednesday after a shoulder injury that had sidelined him since late April. "I was in such a groove in spring training," he said of the timing.
Temper it. A 4.74 xERA off a four-month layoff is a back-end profile, and the Reds may limit his workload early.
Action: STREAM in NL-only and deep formats against weak offenses. Not an add in 12-team mixed leagues.
Romero Joins Brewers as Rosters Expand

JoJo Romero completed his rehab assignment and has joined Milwaukee on the road trip, with activation expected imminently. He'll help cover the loss of Bryse Wilson to the 15-day IL with a lower back strain.
Rosters expand today, Sept. 1, from 26 to 28 players with a maximum of 14 pitchers — which is what opens the activation window for Romero and other depth arms.
Action: STASH in deep and holds leagues. Left-handed relief depth, not a saves path.
Uribe Activated for Wrigley Series

Abner Uribe (43% owned) has been activated — he's back in the Milwaukee bullpen for the series opener at Wrigley Field after completing his rehab assignment.
Action: STASH in holds leagues and deep formats. He sets up for closer Trevor Megill, so this is a ratios-and-holds play rather than a saves speculation.
Judge Cleared for Cage Work

Aaron Judge has been cleared for cage work and is progressing through his hitting program. Aaron Boone said it's "possible" Judge returns during the next homestand without putting a date on it, and he could come back in the second week of September without a rehab assignment.
With Judge out, George Lombard Jr. has been filling in, though he exited with right knee discomfort on Aug. 29 and was tested in agility drills.
Action: WATCH — Hold Judge in every format; he's a first-round bat with a return window inside two weeks. Lombard is a short-term fill only, and his own knee makes him unreliable.
Coby Mayo Gaining Traction

Coby Mayo (5% owned) gained 2.7 points on the add tracker and is getting corner-infield run for a reshaping Orioles roster. He homered off a left-hander on Sunday — his 15th such homer this season, which broke a tie with Matt Olson for the most in the majors.
That last number sits oddly against a 5% ownership figure and is worth verifying, but if it holds, Mayo is being underrated rather than speculated on.
Action: WATCH, leaning ADD in 12-team-plus leagues. Confirm he's starting daily at third or DH before claiming.
De La Cruz Playing Through Quad Strain

Terry Francona said Elly De La Cruz has a small quad strain and that the medical staff believes he can play through it, with the caveat that he sits if it worsens. It's being monitored daily and no IL move appears imminent.
