Morning Java - 09/03: Roberts Sounds Alarm on Ohtani, Detmers Duels Schlittler, Salas Debuts at 20

Roberts Flags Ohtani: "The Tip of the Iceberg"

Dave Roberts said Shohei Ohtani looked physically off in Wednesday's game and described it as "the tip of the iceberg" relative to what he's been observing. Roberts stopped short of an IL decision but said he intends to talk with Ohtani in person today.
This lands on top of what Roberts said over the weekend, when he acknowledged Ohtani wasn't at 100 percent with either his left knee or his right biceps and postponed his return to the mound, adding that he didn't expect everything to reach 100 percent by season's end. Two separate escalating statements in four days is a pattern worth taking seriously rather than a one-off.
The Dodgers' offense didn't help the case for resting him — they stranded 13 runners and went 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
Action: WATCH — Do not drop or sell. But if you have a viable bench bat, be ready to pivot on Thursday's lineup card rather than discovering the absence after first pitch.
Detmers Extends Best Post-Break ERA in Baseball

Reid Detmers allowed one run on six hits over seven innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. The only damage came on Amed Rosario's ground-rule double in the fourth. His 1.52 ERA since the All-Star break is the best in the majors.
The left-hander lost the duel anyway. Cam Schlittler was every bit as good for New York — eight innings, two hits, one run, no walks, nine strikeouts on 99 pitches, including a stretch of 17 consecutive batters retired. Vaughn Grissom's solo homer in the seventh broke that run.
The Angels bullpen gave it away in the 10th. Luke Murphy allowed five two-out runs — a two-run single by Austin Wells followed by RBI singles from Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham and Ben Rice. Moisés Ballesteros answered with a two-run homer off Michael Fulmer in the bottom half, but the Yankees held on 6-3.
One workload note: Detmers is at 163 innings and the Angels are 20-plus games out, so a September innings cap is a live possibility.
Action: HOLD — Elite ratios, but the run support is a real ceiling. Start him for ERA, WHIP and strikeouts and treat wins as a bonus.
Painter Throws Seven Shutout Innings in Best Career Start

Andrew Painter (14% owned) threw seven scoreless innings on two hits with six strikeouts and 93 pitches at Chase Field — the best start of his career — and got nothing for it in a 1-0 loss. Jonathan Bowlan gave up a James McCann homer on his first pitch of the eighth.
The stuff was there: the fastball touched 98.7 mph and averaged 96.3, the changeup generated six whiffs, and he threw a first-pitch strike to 18 of 24 hitters. He now has a 3.12 ERA across seven starts since returning from Triple-A, and Philadelphia had won his previous four outings.
The caveat is the reason he's available at 14%. Painter was optioned on June 18 with a 7.06 ERA and a fastball big-league hitters were batting .404 against, and his full-season ERA remains near 6.00. You are buying the post-demotion version.
Action: ADD in 12-team and deeper leagues. HOLD if rostered. The seven-start sample is now large enough to act on, and a rotation spot on a contender with a six-game playoff cushion means the starts will keep coming.
Jax Returns to the Rays Rotation on a Short Leash

Griffin Jax (40% owned) was reinstated from the 15-day IL and started against the Mets, with Alex Cook optioned to Triple-A Durham in the corresponding move.
Get the role right: Jax was stretched out of a late-inning job into the rotation this season and has made 18 starts against 11 relief appearances, carrying a 6-9 record with a 3.63 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 100 strikeouts. There is no save path here.
He hasn't pitched in a game since Aug. 2 after being scratched from an Aug. 8 start with right elbow discomfort. His rehab work was light — 42 pitches over three innings at Durham on Aug. 23, plus a four-inning simulated game — so expect a capped outing and a bullpen finish behind him.
Tampa Bay is 83-55, the most wins in the American League, and leads the Yankees by 4.5 in the East.
Action: STREAM in 12-team-plus leagues. The pitch count limits the win and strikeout upside in the first turn or two; reassess once he's built back to five-plus innings.
Rogers Sets Career High With 11 K's at Coors

Trevor Rogers (49% owned) set a career high with 11 strikeouts and no walks, allowing two runs on six hits over 6.2 innings — at Coors Field, which makes it more impressive rather than less. Baltimore wasted it, losing 6-5 in 11 when Grant Wolfram surrendered three in the bottom of the inning after the Orioles had taken a two-run lead.
Be clear-eyed about what you're adding. Rogers' season line is a 4.14 ERA and 1.24 WHIP, so this was a career night, not a step change. The supporting evidence is the trend underneath it: 12 quality starts on the year, nine of them in his last 12 outings.
Action: ADD in 12-team-plus leagues on the strikeout upside and the recent run of quality starts. Treat him as a streamer with upside rather than a set-and-forget SP3 until the ERA follows the peripherals.
Salas Debuts at 20, Youngest Catcher Since Pudge

Ethan Salas made his major-league debut at Great American Ball Park, starting behind the plate and batting sixth in a 7-3 loss to Cincinnati. At 20 years, 93 days, he became the youngest player to catch a big-league game since Iván Rodríguez debuted at 19 in 1991, and the youngest Padres catcher since Mike Ivie in 1971.
The debut itself was quiet: 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, flying out to the warning track in his first plate appearance against Reds lefty Brandon Williamson. He caught all nine innings, working with starter Casey Mize.
Salas signed for a record $5.6 million international bonus in January 2023 and hit .296/.374/.448 across 96 games at Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso this season after missing most of 2025 with a lower-back stress reaction. San Diego also recalled Jhony Brito and moved Luis Rengifo to the 60-day IL.
Action: STASH in dynasty formats — this is a franchise catcher arriving three years early. In redraft, pass: he's a 20-year-old getting his first big-league at-bats on a contender that will not carry him if he struggles.
Reds Homer Three Times to Take Series From San Diego

Cincinnati beat San Diego 7-3 with seven unanswered runs. Rookie second baseman Juan Brito — acquired from Cleveland on Aug. 3 for Nathaniel Lowe — hit a game-tying three-run homer, his first in the majors, in just his second start. Two batters later, right fielder Héctor Rodríguez added a solo shot; he now has five home runs in his last 10 games. JJ Bleday capped it in the seventh with his 22nd of the season, a 416-foot two-run drive. Dane Myers added three hits.
Action: ADD Rodríguez in 14-team-plus leagues — five homers in 10 games from an everyday outfielder is a real hot streak, not a call-up novelty. STASH Brito in NL-only and dynasty. HOLD Bleday, who is quietly at 22 homers.
Williamson Wins in First Start Since April

Brandon Williamson (0% owned) made his first major-league appearance since April 29 after four months out with left shoulder fatigue, and picked up the win. Ty France took him deep in the first for his 20th and Fernando Tatis Jr. added an RBI single in the second, but he settled in from there as Cincinnati scored seven unanswered.
Action: STASH in NL-only leagues. He's back in the rotation, but a 0%-owned back-end starter needs more than one outing to justify a mixed-league spot.
Lauer to IL, Dodgers Reshuffle

Jacob Lopez Goes Six With Seven K's

Luis Robert Jr. Debuts for Baltimore

Luis Robert Jr. had a two-run double in his first game with the Orioles after being claimed off outright waivers from the Mets. Baltimore is his third stop this season and he steps into an outfield mix that has been reshuffled repeatedly since the deadline.
Action: WATCH in 12-team leagues. The talent has never been the question — playing time and health are. Give it a week of lineup cards before spending a roster spot, but he's worth watching if he settles into the middle of the order.
Boston's Injury Pileup Continues

Adley Rutschman remains on the IL and will miss a third straight homestand, though the Red Sox are hopeful he can return Thursday in Baltimore. Ceddanne Rafaela exited Wednesday in the seventh as a precaution with quad tightness dating to an Aug. 31 game against Seattle. Willson Contreras discussed his own IL placement publicly for the first time. Mickey Gasper (8% owned) is picking up the slack and gained 2.5 points on the add tracker.
